What phone could be recommended by Gammu author(s) to make SMS gateway ?

Submitted by marcin on Sat 15-Apr-2006

The best is always the most simple device. So, I think that using Nokia 3310 or 3410 can be very good choice. They have removed some SMS bugs (for example, 3330 has buggy firmware - you have to flash it with 3310 firmware to avoid any problems). Especially 3410 is interesting - has got LiIon battery.

More expensive Nokia phones (with own SMS memory) are more complicated and using them is not always good idea (of course, Gammu can do it).

Gammu+ 0.38 is out. I have added configure script, which can enable Bluez AFTER USER ACTION. You have written many times, that source after patching is GPL2 licensed. Please note, that in my opinion it doesn't break GPL2 - if you will have patched source, you can remove Bluez driver (yes, this can be very easy separated) and release source under other license:

…rewolucje są, ale ukryte (2012)

Submitted by marcin on Tue 06-Nov-2012

Wczoraj pytałem się o to, gdzie w świecie IT podziały się rewolucje i zwykła logika. Całkiem prawidłowym komentarzem jednego z użytkowników było stwierdzenie, że nie będzie ich co roku. Nie będzie i koniec i kropka i m.in. to właśnie chciałem wykazać ;)

Dziś chciałbym zastanowić się nad tym, jak zmieniło się nasze życie przez ostatnie kilka(naście) lat w związku z rozwojem technologii.

  • week 18-24 September 2006 was started very good - each day=one release (18 Sep = Gammu stable, 19 Sep = Gammu+ test, 20 Sep = python-gammu, 21 Sep = Wammu)
  • I was looking deeply into earlier/currently available software and asking myself about some things. Some conclusions:
    • MyGnokii was created, because I wanted to play with owned phone. I didn't care too deeply about structures. Later I applied patches for not available for me phones (6210).

In March there was gammu.net domain lost and Italy server not bought for next year.

I started to search new place for this www. It's located now on LiveNet.pl provider server. I payed for one month - if there won't be problems with hosting, I will continue it.

The biggest problem was with moving this Wiki. In old place database was using latin1 to UTF8 conversion, in new it doesn't work. I had to convert database to real UTF8:

What phone could be generally recommended by Gammu author(s) ?

Submitted by marcin on Tue 19-Nov-2002

It's difficult to say. Everyone needs something different according to own needs.

Nokia

If you want to be visible, buy 7650 or 9210. Very visible, very expensive, and parts for it are very expensive. Many small stability problems, no GPRS (in 9210). Weak battery in 7650.

If you need phone for calls, no WAP, but requires extended pbk, buy 6210 or 6250 (second is for any weather and hard environment). Will be able to "repair" (flash) it - it repairs each phone in majority problems. These phones are very slow and has some other small problems.

KMobileTools call for developers

Submitted by marcin on Wed 19-Jul-2006

Request from some developers moved here from gammu.org

KMobileTools is a userfriendly GUI for accessing your mobile phone, using an own AT based engine and a gammu engine. It offers a nice API itself and will be directly integrated into KDE's PIM stuff.
